Abstract

The design of shafts under torsional-bending is of such importance for machines industries as well as automobile plants. The analysis and design of parts should take into account external loadings, like type and loading intensities, the selection and design of appropriate raw material, the manufacturing aspects, heat treatment (matter or surface), and finally the geometric part requirements. The knowledge of these characteristics and their application is relevant when choosing the most reliable model to suceed. The usage of wider cover models, which gather those types and loadings intensities, material strengths and mainly its fatigue limit should be a key to the model selection. This argument is reinforced once than 80% of the failures taken on mechanical parts come from the fatigue phenomena. Thus, this paper aims to detail in a didactic manner the design procedure of shafts under torsional-bending loadings applied on Formula Baja. The model chosen is of maximum shearing stress by Sonderberg, the model is considered appropriate to this kind of mechanical part.
