Abstract

Several articles have addressed the mechanical properties of concrete with the addition of rubber particles obtained from scrap tires. However, this article aimed to identify those properties, as well as environmental, social and economic gains that the reuse can bring to society as a whole. The data in this study were obtained from an exploratory research on the ecological concrete, produced by the Via Viva Institute. The results showed that the green concrete with the addition of rubber particles shredded scrap tires to replace part of the gravel, confers important mechanical properties, but its cost is higher compared to conventional. However, this cost may be negligible in relation to social gains, by reducing the spread of disease and income generation for people with disabilities, and environmental gains, with the decreased use of natural resources. Thus, it was concluded that, using this product, environmental and social gains are immeasurable. For this technology is widespread in many sectors of construction, it is necessary a greater incentive for the government's use of ecological concrete, through new laws and tax cuts for those involved in this chain.
