Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate how people resignify their lives after adverse situations. This was a qualitative study with four women who have faced adverse situations, being two Brazilians who have recovered from cancer and two Angolan war survivors. Open interviews were conducted and results assessment was performed based on the categorization and analysis of data collected during the interviews. The discussion was drawn from the theoretical framework of Analytical Psychology. In this study it was found that all interviewees have made use of a feature face in overcoming the crisis. The Brazilian recovered from cancer said that motherhood and family were crucial in this recovery, while the Angolan war survivors reported that spirituality has fulfilled this role in their lives. It was also found that from the experiences of adversity and through the coping resources, some changes might occur in the lives of participants. We identified three areas where changes have happened: life in general, values and meaning of life.
