Abstract

The syndrome is characterized by immobility, immobility in bed for more than 15 days, causing changes in the musculoskeletal system, respiratory, metabolic, among others, impacting negatively on the body. The rest was taken as a therapeutic measure since 1960, however, been observed that the immobilization of a body segment may be necessary for treatment, but the immobilization of the whole body can be harmful. Immobility is usually due to chronic degenerative disease, disability or inactivity, thus the situation of strict bed rest can be seen in the hospital environment, home environment and long-term institutions. Assuming that early mobilization generates benefits to patients suffering from injuries, physical therapy has essential role in treating these patients, preventing and / or minimizing the deleterious effects caused by prolonged recumbency. This work aimed to prepare a guidance manual for caregivers of bedridden patients that fall into the syndrome of immobility in bed. This manual is designed with a focus on physical therapy and approach regarding its indications and goals.
