The cervix cancer is an illness of great prevalence in Brazil, that affects women independent of their social class, ethnicity or education, which rates of seriousness and lethality remain high. Preventive actions are developed in all health care programs never the less the death rates were not yet reduced. By way of the gynecological nursing check up and by health education, the rate of prevention will be improved. Since the programs developed by the health care teams have not reached their proposed goals for the reduction of women that are victims of cervical cancer, this project had to be reviewed in order to analyze by way of studies already produced, the perception of Brazilian women concerning the pap smear test, and also evaluate the nurse’s place in the procedure. The results show that shame, fear and limited access to services, among the lack of available appointments and the change of professionals are the principal barriers confronted by women in search of the examination. Education, professional capacity and empathy between the professional and patient appear in the majority of the analyzed studies, as the principal reasons for the increase of the Pap smear test. The conclusion is that the nurse has a primary influence on health care, promoting education and preparing the community nursing teams, diminishing the factors that facilitate the reasons for not having the Pap smear test done.
