In the last years the automation of operations and processes has created opportunities and challenges for companies which desire to remain competitive in this changing market. Automation usually provides good results in terms of quality, control and security of information, velocity to execute activities, as well over cost reduction. However technology alone is not able to lead organizations to be more competitive, efficient and quality-oriented. More important than define how to use computers (or information technology) to improve the business processes, is to identify which one need to be improved (John, 2012).The important thing is to establish how the business operations must be done and which are the key business requirements. After that is possible to choose the software that fit the company's needs (Turban and Volonino, 2011). The risk is invest much time and money in business processes that are not important (John, 2012).Therefore actions, initiatives and investments in process automation should consider all the organization, to provide balance and harmony between operations and company information, avoiding waste of resources and produce "islands of information" and "bottlenecks" in the processes.The article proposes the use a model to measure and analyze the use efficient of automation resources of organization's processes. Aiming to demonstrate the "automation index model" the model was applied at a service sector company, and the results obtained allow analyze how the company is structure in terms of automation resources used to business operation.
