THE MEMORY AND THE LANGUAGE IN PROVERBIAL ENUNCIATIONS BY ELDERLY WITH ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE
Keywords:
Memory, Proverbs, Alzheimer’s diseaseAbstract
This paper aims to describe the relations between language and memory in the proverbial enunciations of elderly with Alzheimer's disease, discussing different memory processes involved in understanding and use of proverbs, well as the importance of memory functioning and its structures on aging for the use of socio-cognitive strategies employed in the interpretation of formulaic expressions (proverbial expressions). In the interpretation of proverbs, the inference required was based predominantly on the association of contextual information with prior knowledge of the individual. The data of proverbial expressions exemplified in this text showed that the metaphorical expressions can not be analyzed as just inferential. It is necessary to interpret the contexts and enunciative situations in which they are produced and with active participation of the socio-cultural memory of the individual.
