Abstract

The usage of herbal medicine in treatment of many diseases is millenary. The present study reports the implantation of phytotherapics in the Neuropathic and Vascular Injury Specialized Service (SELVEN) associated with already standardized coverage in Valinhos-SP. The wounds, mainly vascular ulcers, are a great challenge to SUS, due to them being of complicated skin healing, and cause pain and discomfort to the patient, besides its high cost to the health service. Due to Valinhos city being the largest regional guava producer, the project was elaborated in a way to use local resources, therefore the tea made with guava and pitanga leaves were initially chosen, as a result of their easy access and low cost. After approval in the Human Ethics Committee, the patients signed a consent term and started to wash the wounds in a daily basis with the tea, made by decoction from plants keeping it in contact with the wound for 30 minutes. The lesions had an accentuated improvement, especially when evaluated decrease in secretion, pain and smell. Wound reepithelialization was faster, with some cases reporting closure of the same, since tannins contained in these plants precipitate with proteins forming a protection layer, besides antimicrobial activity. Sunflower oil (AGE) was also applied over the majority of wounds which assisted the skin healing, once the essential fatty acids help with fibroblast production. The relative cost for treatment of these diseases was smaller, since the skin healing time shortened, in addition with many patients having avoided surgical operations. What can be evaluated from the implantation of phythoterapics in SELVEN was that both patient and health system have advantaged with costs reduction and improvement in patient comfort.
