Abstract

Neuropathic pain, as a painful process due to primary injury in the nervous system reaching somatosensory system, is explained by several theories, given the complexity of its pathophysiology. Its diagnosis is complicated by the absence of objective measurement of nociception. This work presents a literature review about neuropathic pain, identifying its main aspects in small animals, focusing on its treatment, highlighting modalities that are adjuvants to traditional drug therapy, such as physiotherapy and acupuncture, which have a key role in the adequate management of pain, presenting as safe, low or non-invasive therapies with reduced adverse effects and affordable cost.
