Abstract

Objective: to create and propose the implantation of a Standart Operation Procedure on the use of the instrument NIPS (Neonatal Infant Pain Scale) to evaluate pain in the newborn to be used by the nursing team of the neonatal intensive care unit of Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Mogi Hospital Guaçu. Method: a technical action research is proposed, following the scheme known as the Deming wheel (identification of initial situations, projection of research and actions, accomplishment of planned activities, evaluation of results obtained). All the nursing team that acts in the direct care to the newborns was invited to participate in the research through a TCLE. The research was approved by the CEP under the protocol 51694615.9.0000.5409 / 2015. The study was carried out between January and August 2016. Results: all employees reported knowing that the newborn feels pain and considered it important to minimize the pain of the newborn. More than half of them knew of an instrument for evaluating pain, and some mentioned only the name of the instrument, but did not know how to use it. The employees indicated that the protocol of evaluation of the pain would contribute positively in the assistance realized to the newborn. Conclusions: The standardization of care is mandatory and is what guides care, making it integral, consecutive, efficient and effective. This is an advantageous item for the prevention of accusations and audits, since the POP bases the nursing care instituted by the hospital inserted with technical-scientific references.
