Abstract

Due to eating habits and general lifestyle of the population, obesity has increased significantly through the latest years. Brazil has now joined the list of countries with most obese population, with relative numbers crossing the 50% margin, according to the ABESO. Yet these numbers tend to increase even further with time, partly influenced by the media and the globalisation process. Consequentially, comes an increase in the cases of Dyslipidemia and of nontransmissible chronic diseases. In the following work, we revisit the current standards on occurrence of obesity in the country, along with the possible causes of such prevalence. This was achieved through literature analysis and revision, in articles published between the years 1990 and 2017. These are indexed in the Google Scholar, SciELO and Pubmed databases. Articles that were not integrally available, or available only in English, were excluded. A significant increase in obesity between 2011 and 2016 was observed, especially in the Central-West region. Following the data was essential in determining this highly disorganized increase, caused by unhealthy eating habits and bringing along non-transmissible chronic diseases, aggravating the health of the general population.
