Causes of family refusal in the organ donation process

Organ donation is an act performed after death confirmed by encephalic death Objective of this integrative review study was to evaluate the causes of refusal of families of potential donors in the organ donation process. Method: Data search was done from August 29 to October 25, 2017 and the health terminology consulted in the DECS was used. In order to select the articles, the following key words were used: databases of the Virtual Health Library, Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (Lilacs) and Scientific Eletronic Library Online (SciELO), donation of organs, encephalic death and family. Results: The refusal to donate was evidenced by the lack of knowledge of the will of the potential donor. The causes of family refusal are related to the lack of understanding of the diagnosis of brain death by relatives, aspects related to religion and lack of preparation of the professionals who performed the interview. Final Considerations: The training of the health professional is fundamental so that donation of organs is seen as a humanitarian form is that in schools this theme is part of the pedagogical projects of the courses in the health area
