Abstract

The worldwide incidence of humor changes in inpatients at general hospitals varies between 20% and 50%. (MARCOLINO et al., 2007). Anxiety and depression are common and expected as a response from stress, which can be part of the process of adaptation or the process of facing unexpected situations. In view of the impact of anxiety and depression in the quality of inpatients treatment at general hospitals, the aim of this work is to verify and discuss what the level of anxiety and depression in this public is, as well as its possible causes and management. A review of the literature at Scielo, Lilacs and BVS bases was done, resulting in 16 articles which answered to the guiding question of the research. Analyzing the works, the studies were grouped and classified in four categories: anxiety and depression in general hospitals; anxiety and depression in patients with cancer; evaluation of anxiety and depression in patients before surgery, and anxiety and depression in patients with chronic pain. It is noted that there is a necessity of a look broader for those patients who are at general hospitals, including the concept of health as well as physical and mental wellness. It is important to highlight that a dialogue with the patient clarifying their doubts and listening to the their anguish will help them to relieve their pain.
