Abstract

In this work, we relate the auditory sensations of bass and sharp with experimental results of sound frequency. We have explored some classifications of sound frequencies in the literature and adopted them at our own class. We have defined as a divisor between high and low frequencies the value of 315 Hz. We report the measurement of sound frequency through a properly validated smartphone application, identifying and characterizing pure tones. We measure and classify the frequencies of some sound sources, namely spoken and sung voices, whistles of ships in the Port of Santos region and sounds of mosquitoes and cicadas. We propose the adaptation of this experiment in formal and informal teaching environments. The experiments of this work illustrate the ease and adaptability of the activity developed in several situations.
