Abstract

Accessibility is a constant concern of architecture and urbanism in the last decades, being directly linked to the provision of conditions to people with disabilities or with reduced mobility, with the intention that they can use public or collective spaces with total or assisted autonomy and safety. It is evident that many buildings in operation do not attend the accessibility requirements, as they were built before this topic was fully debated and required within the parameters of construction. The literature requires references about the late installation of equipments that promotes accessibility, so the objective of this paper is to expose a case study that proposes the installation of a lifting platform in an educational institution as a late solution, where there is a lack of this demand and to contribute with the bibliography on the subject. It was noted that the application of the equipment proposed for the case study is a viable alternative. However, investments in awareness are still needed for old buildings to adapt to serve disabled people with greater comfort and convenience.
