Abstract

This study was developed from the interest in deepening the knowledge about the challenges that nurses face in the postpartum follow-up of incarcerated women, with the aim of reviewing the literature based on this content. Methodology: an advanced search was performed, using the Health Sciences Descriptors and their synonyms: “Postpartum period; Puerperium; Nursing; Prisoners; Imprisoned”, together with the Boolean operators OR and AND, thus, 1,288 articles were found, which were filtered based on our inclusion criteria, remaining 192 articles that were evaluated, with 4 being selected for our study. Results and Discussion: The articles show that most incarcerated women are young adults, single and with low education. Among them are pregnant and postpartum women, who entered prison pregnant or not. The woman's health care policy establishes that every pregnant woman deprived of liberty has the right to adequate monitoring throughout her pregnancy, including prenatal care, childbirth and the puerperium, as well as the health of the child, but most Brazilian prisons they do not have adequate structure or care, which exposes the pregnant woman and her child to risks.
