This study aimed to evaluated the prevalence of cognitive deficit and associated factors in elderly community members, monitored by the Family Health Strategy of a pole city in Jequitinhonha Valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Cross-sectional epidemiological study, analytical, using questionnaire at the home of 312 elderly people between January 2018 and May 2019. To screen for cognitive deficit, the Mini-Mental State Examination was used. The prevalence of cognitive deficit was estimated with a 95% Confidence Interval (95% CI).Initially, univariate analysis was performed, between the dependent variable and the potential independent variables. Variables that presented p < 0.20 and gross odds ratios (Odds ratio) and their respective confidence intervals > 1.0, were included in a hierarchical binary logistic regression model, estimating the adjusted odds ratios and their respective 95% CI. The prevalence of cognitive deficit was 64.4% with an average score on the Mini-Mental State Examination of 22.64. The factors that were associated with the cognitive deficit were female gender, older age and dependence for instrumental activities of daily living. The older adult's cognitive ability is determined by factors associated with sociodemographic conditions and functionality.
