Abstract

The purpose of this work is to revise the aspects of ovine reproduction and the application of artificial insemination in such species. Ewes are short-day seasonal polyestric animals, presenting regular cycles in this period. The anatomy of the reproductive tract of ewes makes artificial insemination difficult. Cervical rings adjust to each other in a way that they occlude cervix safely and make the passage of pipette difficult during insemination. Due to such difficulties, new techniques for improving the results of artificial insemination in this species have been developed so that genetic improvement and the best utilization of animals can occur. In this way, there will be an increase in productivity and quality of flocks.
